CURRENT MESSAGE SERIES:

By Dr. Donn S. Chapman, Senior Pastor

This summer, our weekend messages will be centered in the book of Proverbs. God wants His people to be wise. Sadly, it seems to me that our culture is big on knowledge, but coming up short on wisdom. One definition I have read for wisdom is the insight and confidence to face all of life's realities. So, if you want to build a life of significance, make sense of your journey along the way, succeed at home and at work, and please God, then wisdom is what you need - and the book of Proverbs is the perfect place to find it.

Many scholars believe that the book of Proverbs was first given by the Holy Spirit as a textbook for young men who were being prepared for leadership in Israel. I believe that this summer God is going to use Proverbs as His textbook for bringing His best into our lives.

In fact, the great news from Proverbs is that wisdom makes herself available to all who will seek her. We learn early in Proverbs that wisdom comes from two main sources: revelation from God (Proverbs 2:6) and personal discipline (Proverbs 2:4). Therefore, gaining wisdom can be a gift from God Himself - but it can also involve personal sacrifice and come at a cost to us. Yet, no matter the cost, wisdom is always worth seeking (Proverbs 8:34-36). When we discover wisdom, we are blessed, we find life, and we receive the favor of the Lord. Without wisdom, we become fools, we harm ourselves, and we come to love death.

The key to real wisdom is a right relationship with God. This comes from both fearing God (revering Him and holding Him in awe) and trusting Him. God is the one, true source of wisdom and the standard for our righteousness. He opens the doors to success in our lives, and He directs our steps in joy and victory. Real wisdom always looks to God for His counsel, His standards, and His truth.

Much of the wisdom in Proverbs is given as fatherly advice. Our heavenly Father still seeks to warn us against the sinful people and the sin that would destroy us - and to direct us toward the truth and discipline that will bring His blessing in our lives. If we don't heed this fatherly counsel, we become fools, or perhaps one of the cousins of a fool - a scoffer or a sluggard. As we look at the consequences of neglecting godly wisdom, we find plenty of motivation to slam the door on being fools and to walk instead through wisdom's open door.

This is the summer for all of us to wise up, and Proverbs is just the place to learn how. Our lives really are like a long series of doors, and wisdom shows us which doors to open and walk through - and which ones to slam shut and avoid. Interestingly, 1 Corinthians 1:30 tells us that Jesus "has become for us wisdom from God." So, with Jesus' presence to guide us in the study of His words of wisdom from Proverbs, we can expect to receive God's blessing in every area of our lives through the priceless gift of His wisdom - if we will but open our hearts to Him this summer.
